Adobe have decided to rename Flash Player 8.5 to Flash Player 9.
Some of the good reasons being discussed are;
- everybody believes that the new player is apt to be a major version and not just a minor release.
- easier to talk to clients and marketing folks
- still thinking of more

Oh well, like if most ppl even care to install a major release, let alone a “dot” release. :P
For me the “8.5″ tag has been a developer-only naming scheme from the beginning.
The new Flash Player 9 is successful product
nice move!!! I used to think that 8.5 is beta version
