I have Ubantu installed on an old pc but the rest run on Windows. Linux is great but Windows still rules the World and I need to be in the crowd

First let tell you I am a Linux enthusiast and I've been using it since 1997 (RedHat 6.2). I do see more Linux these days on desktop than before, but most of the people I successfully convinced to switch to Ubuntu ended up returning to Windows. They all had the same problem: drivers. Until more developers start working on drivers and hardware manufacturers recognize Linux nothing will change much. Until February 2009 Market Share reported Linux is under 1% of the computers used by web surfers. We have a long way to go.

The enthusiasts already know about the greatness of Linux and FLOSS tools; its their brothers, friends, and parents to whom we need to demonstrate this superior technology. Unfortunately, I don't think that the parents are the ones who will be switching any time soon.

But we can still spread the good word as far as it will go, which is usually as far as a new user is willing to try something new and different. Not everyone is willing to do this, unfortunately.

I do use Ubuntu at home. But if we want to consider Linux taking fair amount of share of the OS market then there has to be one distro catering to all the great stuff provided by Fedora, Suse, Ubuntu, PcLinux etc. Then only Linux can be the real winner, I do have faith and believe that Linux will.

One of the other advantages is that the Linux kernel (open source) can be complied to suit various architectures. This is the prime reason that we often hear some or the other devices in which Linux has been ported to. Though the multiple distros is often considered as a bane, I personally feel (as you mentioned) it is one of the reasons that the developer community is getting stronger. You can create a distro to suit your needs. There are distros (especially in Ubuntu) which are specially meant for Multimedia
