While in college, I attended the Red Hat Academy, which basically provided a brief introduction to Linux. It was a class offered by the school, but that followed a course plan provided by RedHat. I was already using Linux on my servers at the time, but hadn't switched to using it on a desktop yet. It was a pretty good experience and introduction to the power that is Linux.

"Hah, you're joking right?" As funny as it may seem, the numbers do actually support this statement. Calling certification a joke is akin to saying our entire education system is faulty. Now we all know it isn't perfect so let's leave this out of that debate. However certification has made it easier for larger corporations to absorb Linux into its fold since they do judge prospective recruits by their certifications. That's not to say that the college degree holder with a dozen certifications is necessarily more proficient than a high-school drop-out who spends all his time honing his skills. Yet there has to be a logical method of gauging one's capabilities. These are our few real alternatives albeit not ideal.

"You'd be best off trying to make sure such rubbish takes no hold in this industry, so that the leeches attempting to survive at everyone else's expense do not flourish."

Your suggestions on how this can be achieved will be eagerly awaited my friend.

"computer engineering students to follow certifications such as the Microsoft series"

Hah, you're joking right? The MS `certifications' are only for `community college' or high-school graduates at best.

`Certification' is a joke ... it is pretty much the anti-thesis of everything that free software stands for. Is is just some organisation is extracting a rent for providing limited and unnecessary services. It is all about `training', and nothing about `education'. In the long-run, it is simply worthless.
