In today’s connected world, have you ever looked back at the times when we had conversations with loved ones face to face, hand in hand or if that wasn’t possible we wrote them hand written letters on hand made paper adorned with hand crafted insignia or memorabilia? Nostalgic isn’t it? Today I’d rather meet people on Facebook, exchange notes on Twitter and read/send mail on my Blackberry. In fact I almost loathe having to make a telephonic conversation. Why can’t you just email/txt/IM me instead? And I’m no teeny bopper, I’m a man entering middle age mind you. So imagine today’s youth doomed with the prospect of no connectivity. How would they respond to such a world?
The idea started when Trent Mitchell, a video-production teacher at Shorecrest saw the movie The Social Network, a story about the founding of Facebook and wondered if his students could cut themselves off from text and Facebook. Mitchell, 36 told the students that he didn’t think they could tear themselves away from social media. Half the students said they could do it; the other half thought it was the worst idea they’d ever heard, he said. So he pulled in friend and teacher Marty Ballew, and together created The Social Experiment.
There has lately been enough pressure from three corners of the technology world on Apple, which has coerced it to change its policy control over the development of applications for its iPhones and iPads. At one corner of the ring is the developers’ community which has been highly dissatisfied with Apple’s strict policy on developing application software; at the other two corners are external forces, namely the Federal Trade Commission conducting a US antitrust investigation on the technology firm and Competition rising from rival Google’s Android software which plays a huge role in powering several mobile devices (Smartphones) other than iPhone.
In an earlier post we had covered the December 16 release of what is the first ever Gingerbread Android phone i.e. the Google Nexus S. Today, my daughter is 2 years old and I’m unfortunate that I won’t be by her side. I’m writing a letter to her and making it public so my readers, friends and family will, in a way, remind me to keep my promises to her.
During her first year, I was working on my first startup and I missed most part of her earlier months. It was easier on her as she have no understanding of my absence. By the time we were together for about a year, I had given up on my failed startup. I knew that I had to be away from her again when I decided to take another plunge, get-up from my failed attempt and try harder. I just wasn’t sure how soon that would be.
Acer which is more often than not known for its efficient Notebooks and its customized production of Ferrari Smartphones, now wants to gain a lot of attention. This attention-grabbing stint of Acer will be through the launch of not just one product, but the unveiling of a whole range of new-age hardware products which shall cater to a future-ready consumer audience. In the earlier days (early 2000) it was and even now is to some extent, Apple which regularly comes up with novel products that are termed legendarily as ground-breaking innovations. In the recent past, Apple is slowly but steadily facing competition from several players who also seem to have started making headlines with their innovative product-launches.
Many technologists believe that mobile technology is going to take over our lives in the near future.
Personally, I have a hard time seeing such small devices ever take the place of PCs only because they are a little more awkward to use. Nevertheless, if the inevitable mobile revolution takes place, most people are betting that the Android will lead the way.
