What are Microformats?

— By

Microformats are a set of simple, open data formats built upon existing and widely adopted standards. Instead of throwing away what works today, microformats intend to solve simpler problems first by adapting to current behaviors and usage patterns. Microformats are

  • a way of thinking about data
  • design principles for formats
  • adapted to current behaviors and usage patterns
  • highly correlated with semantic XHTML, AKA the real world semantics, AKA lowercase semantic web, AKA lossless XHTML
  • a set of simple open data format standards that many are actively developing and implementing for more/better structured blogging and web microcontent publishing in general
  • “An evolutionary revolution”
  • all the above

When, how to listen to Podcasts or how to make use of your old iPod?

— By

To me, it is not that practically possible to listen to podcasts while you’re at your computer, at work. Podcast are different from music and thus need to be listened to with concentration, in a way to understand what the podcast is talking about. One can listen to music and still work but not with podcast. So, how can you save your time, not disturb yourself at work but still be able to listen to podcasts.

Hibernate is a powerful, high performance object/relational persistence and query service. Hibernate lets you develop persistent classes following object-oriented idiom – including association, inheritance, polymorphism, composition, and collections. Hibernate allows you to express queries in its own portable SQL extension (HQL), as well as in native SQL, or with an object-oriented Criteria and Example API.

Corporate trends in ActionScript codes?

— By

We were reviewing few ActionScript codes of bunch of developers. It so happened while looking at a group of codes from about 4-5 developers; they looked very similar. We realized that

  • they don’t really love whitespace at all
  • have abusive usage of eval (it should be avoided as it is already deprecated)
  • lots of mc1.mc2.mc3.mc4. type of code (can be avoided by coding to interfaces and letting each entity perform its action and access it through a public API)

Well, they were all from the same corporate/company. So, we were thinking if corporate/company have a tendency or wavelength of coding habits, standards and (bad) practices. Anyway, we have to live with the fact that they can be trained and make them realize what we do and what we should do.

Wink – free screen capture software

— By

Wink is a free and an easy to use screen capture software. It takes specific number of screenshots of the specified window, area or screen including keyboard and mouse events. Infact, one can capture anything in wink. Once a capture is done, the user can edit the thumbnails (key frames), add text, shapes, audio, navigation buttons and/or hyperliks.

Preloaders can also be added in wink and they are customisable to a great extent. The power of wink lies in its optimisation capacity, its low CPU usage and a light footprint. Optionally, a minimal set of color can be selected which reduces the file size amazingly. Wink can export the captured data to PDF which is a great feature by itself.

Thanks to Sagar Parikh for testing this software.
