Adobe Photoshop CS2

— By

Many Thanks to Adobe for the Photoshop CS2 Review Copy. I have been stealing time in between my schedules to test this out for the past one month. Personally, I never felt the need to compare Photoshop with any other Image Editors. Maybe, my exposure to the variety of image editors are conservative but then the few that I tried never matched up to what Photoshop does. My review here may be rather vague and not that professional as I am not a professional Graphic/UI Designer, I tried out the features after reading about them and after consulting our Designer Team.

Photoship CS2 was installed on my Lenovo (erstwhile IBM) Thinkpad R52 Intel Centrino running on 1.86GHz with about 1.25 GB of RAM sporting a screen resolution of 1400 × 1050 DPI displayed on a 32bit color depth. While testing, most of the time it was run as a stand-alone program, sometimes with Microsoft Outlook and Firefox opened.

SessionSaver Firefox Extension

— By

Have you been in a situation where Firefox crashed and you lost track of all the tabs that were opened, important ones and you have to fiddle back to your brain to remember them. SessionSaver is a Firefox Extension that saves your last session, you can even have it restored everytime Firefox starts.

It even claims to save windows, tabs, even things you were typing (I haven’t experienced this part of the fun).

More Details about SessionSaver.

Should you upgrade to Eclipse 3.2M5?

— By

Eclipse Grand Challenge – cut the memory footprint in half with the upcoming 3.2M5 Eclipse SDK milestone.

JAR files are now read more selectively, and thus interesting portions remain in the cache longer without consuming lots of memory. User editing experience is thus significantly improved on large workspaces containing big JARs. As a consequence, our experiments show that the memory requirement for developing Eclipse in Eclipse can be lowered to 128MB only (i.e. passing -Xmx128m to the VM) as opposed to 256MB as currently specified in the eclipse.ini file.

Design Pattern and User Interface Library from Yahoo!

— By

Everyone have blogged about Design Pattern Library and User Interface Library from Yahoo! Developer Network. Let me do my bit for the archive.

The Yahoo! User Interface Library is a set of utilities and controls, written in JavaScript, for building richly interactive web applications using techniques such as DOM scripting, HTML and AJAX. The UI Library Utilities facilitate the implementation of rich client-side features by enhancing and normalizing the developer’s interface to important elements of the browser infrastructure (such as events, in-page HTTP requests and the DOM). The Yahoo UI Library Controls produce visual, interactive user interface elements on the page with just a few lines of code and an included CSS file. All the components in the Yahoo! User Interface Library have been released as open source under a BSD license and are free for all uses.

The Yahoo! Design Pattern Library is an evolving set of sophisticated design guidelines for building web pages and applications. The design patterns do not require the Yahoo! UI Library components, although using the UI Library can help you more easily implement the patterns.

The Yahoo! UI Library downloads contains documentations, source files and examples of the various libraries.

Aftermath of a Fresh Windows Install, Few Tips

— By

Whenever I do an install or a re-intall of Windows, I do coupla Must-Do-Tweaks. I have them written down so I know how to execute them in steps. Let me archive some of them here for future reference.

Customize Folder Context Menu

Start > Run and type “Regedit”

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\Shell\]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shell\]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Shell\]

Shutdown is Slower – Windows XP

Start > Run and type “Regedit”

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet
\Control
\Session Manager
\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

Alternate method for Windows XP Professional

Start > Run and type “Secpol.msc”
Click Local Policies | Security Options
In the right-pane, set “Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile” to “Disabled”

However, this setting is not the only cause for slow shutdowns. Non-responsive programs and Services also contribute to slow shutdowns. Lowering the WaitToKillServiceTimeOut may help as well. The WaitToKillServiceTimeout value name in the registry allows you to specify a length of time that the service control manager must wait for services to complete the shut-down request. To do this;

Start > Run and type “Regedit”

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet
\Control
\WaitToKillServiceTimeout

Then, reduce the Service timeout value (default being 20000ms) to your preference.

Similarly, set the AutoEndTasks to 1 in the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Control Panel
\Desktop

“AutoEndTasks” value determines whether user processes end automatically when the user either logs off or shuts down Windows 2000/XP.

23hq is a Flickr like Photo Sharing Application. Recently we finished an additional feature to their application. 23hq have given us some coupons for their PLUS Paid Service to raffle. Just like I gave away some Flickr Pro Account sometime back, I am willing to give this away to interested readers who can summon up enough time to mail/comment for the same.
