- Measure relentlessly. Track cost per API call, mean time to recovery, and revenue per feature. Data will drive every decision.
- Hire T-shaped generalists.1 You need engineers who can touch front-end, back-end, and AI pipelines. They learn fast and fill multiple roles.
Y Combinator believes that capital efficiency will be the next frontier of competitive advantage. If their prediction holds, we’ll see a fresh wave of startups vying not on total headcount but on technical leverage. Each one will treat AI as a core infrastructure layer, not a bolt-on feature.
Of course, predictions can miss the mark. Giants like Google and Meta aren’t standing still. They’re investing billions in research, tooling, and specialized chips. They have battle-tested infra and teams that run 24/7, without missing a single beat of a nanosecond. Outsmarting them will require not just smart code but deep domain knowledge, world-class execution, and an almost fanatical focus on metrics that matter.
Yet for founders willing to swim upstream, the ultra-lean path isn’t just theory. Companies such as Zapier and Figma started with tiny teams and went on to become multi-hundred-million-dollar companies. Now AI accelerates every step of that journey.
It won’t be a smooth ride, but for the right idea, the right team, and a bit of hustle, we might just witness the dawn of the first 10-person, $100 billion company.
